Palestine Regional Medical Center implemented a hospitalist program three years ago and has found it to be advantageous, not only to the patient, but also to the patient's primary physician.

So what exactly is a hospitalist? A hospitalist is a physician who cares for patients while they stay at the hospital as inpatients. Hospitalists have no patient care responsibilities outside the hospital, which enables them to focus exclusively on inpatients. Hospitalist physicians are specialists in Internal Medicine and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While the patient is hospitalized the hospitalist will perform examinations, order lab and radiology tests, do procedures and administer other kinds of treatment, according to necessity. Hospitalists work closely with the patients referring physician as well, returning the patient to their primary care physician for follow-up after discharge. The patient's primary care physician will receive a summary of the hospital stay so they can pick up the outpatient care most efficiently.
The hospitalist program is successful and provides our community with the highest quality care possible.
