National Senior Health & Fitness Day

Approximately 100 senior adults enjoyed exercise and a picnic lunch at Reagan Park Wednesday morning 5/26/11.The common goal for this 18th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day is …"Make Fitness a Goal for Life" according to the official website. Always set on the last Wednesday in May, this date is the national’s largest annual health promotion event for older adults.
Palestine Regional Medical Center hosted Senior Health and Fitness Day with several agencies participating in the event. Monnie Giles, certified personal trainer, Palestine Regional and Senior Friends exercise instructor, lead resistance band exercises. Also Sue Elrod led Tai Chi, Palestine Resource Center, PRCIL, demonstrated safe verses unsafe environment, PRMC Therapy Dept. evaluated the risk of falls, Crown and Encompass Home Health agencies performed blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels and At Home Health care led walks around the park .
The outing concluded with a picnic lunch provided by PRCIL and Scott and White Health Plan. Senior Friend’s Coordinator Andrea Sims stated, “This was a beautiful morning and we had such a great group to exercise with!”
Senior Friends is a national organization with more than 15,000 members. The Palestine Regional Medical Center chapter began in April 2009 and has about 250 members.
